He is optimistic that the $1.6 million Beach Road corridor improvement plan will get federal funding.
“We have submitted the plan…and we’re hoping for its approval,” said Barrett in an interview with the Variety.
He said the proposal is for the design of the Beach Road redevelopment plan.
The plan is a coordinated initiative involving different agencies, and it aims “to reduce dependency on fossil fuel and to use clean technologies” along Beach Road.
According to Barrett, the feedback from the various stakeholders during the public consultation last week at the multi-purpose center was positive.
“Cars are here to stay but it should be in a more useful, efficient and clean way,” Barrett said.
Efficient and alternative vehicles will be introduced by the plan, he added.
Barrett said Beach Road redevelopment covers the stretch of 6.5 miles from American Memorial Park in Garapan to the Pacific Islands Club in San Antonio.
Barrett said the proposal will encourage healthy island living and a business-friendly environment.
He noted that 74 percent of hotels, residential and business activities are on Beach Road.
