Benavente named new House JGO vice chairman

Rep. Rosemond B. Santos, R-Saipan, likewise named her fellow Saipan Republican Stanley T. Torres as JGO member replacing Rep. Tina Sablan, Ind.-Saipan.

Salas and Sablan resigned from the committee due to  Santos’ “management style.”

Salas and Sablan were among the sponsors of House Bill 16-86 which would have granted long-term guest workers a five-year labor permit.

But Santos said the bill gives foreign national workers false hopes and recommended the shelving of the measure.

After the House voted to “file” the bill, Sablan resigned from the committee.

She said she’s deeply disturbed that committee decisions can be made without the consensus of the majority members and that they can be excluded from reviewing and commenting on a committee report if their views are expected to be in conflict with those of the chairwoman.

Santos told committee members, which also include Rep. Joseph C. Reyes, R-Saipan, and Rep. Edwin P. Aldan, Covenant-Tinian, that they will have a meeting on Friday.

“The purpose of this meeting is to review and discuss all comments and pending legislation that are referred to the committee,” she said in a memorandum issued yesterday.
