Boy Scouts need adult leaders

However, Jess Muna, the BSA district chairman, believes there are still committed individuals who are willing to offer their personal time.

On Wednesday, during its district committee meeting at the scouting office in Garapan, the BSA officials discussed the need for more adult leaders who can work with the scouts.

Earlier, the Boy Scouts collaborated with the Neighborhood Watch Task Force in its campaign against criminality in the community.

Wayne Gillespie, BSA district commissioner, said they need about 20 adult leaders who can be  scout masters or assistant scout masters.

It is not necessary to have a background in scouting, he said, since they can always train any interested adult leaders.

He said an adult leader can lead young people into productive activities like community service, and the campaign against alcohol or illegal drugs.

Mark Birmingham, BSA membership and relationship chairman, said community members should take advantage of the scouting program.

“We offer a tailored-made program for Saipan,” he said.

Calisto Reyes, BSA island director, said the scouting ideal is to train the youth to be better persons in the community.

Muna said they have lots of programs that have been postponed due to the lack of adult leaders.

An adult leader should be at least 21 years old, of good moral character, has no felony record and is not using illegal drugs.

For those interested to volunteer, call Calisto Reyes at 285-9709, Wayne Gillespie at 483-0885, Mark Birmingham at 236-22202 or Jess Muna at 483-0442.

On Wednesday, the CNMI Boy Scouts of America district committee thanked all the chartered organizations, the adult leaders on Saipan, Rota and Tinian, and all the donors and contributors of their programs.

The donors include JE Tenorio Holdings, Bridge Capital Inc., Salvation Army, Herman’s Modern Bakery, Joeten Enterprises, Tan Holdings, Foremost Company, Fiesta Resort and Spa, Century Insurance, Pacific Islands Club, Aquarius Beach Tower, Saipan World Resort, Pacific Trading Company, Rep. Diego T. Benavente, the Saipan Mayor’s Office, the Rota Mayor’s Office, the Tinian Mayor’s Office and the Public School System.
