Brand new car sales down by 46%

Based on the latest reports released by the Commonwealth Auto Dealers Association, the island’s three car dealers sold only 36 brand new vehicles in January.

Last year’s sales for the same month totaled 67 units.

Last month’s total brand new vehicle sales included 17 sedans, six trucks, three vans and 10 sports utility vehicles.

Microl Corp. topped the sales with 15 brand new units sold for a 41.67 percent market share.

Triple “J” Motors followed with 11 units sold, claiming a 30.56 percent share of the market, while Joeten Motors with 10 units sold posted a 27.78 percent market share.

There were 33 used cars sold in January.

Microl sold the most number with 17 used cars, representing a 51.5 percent market share. Joeten Motors followed with 11 units sold while Triple “J” had five.

Last year, the three car dealers sold a total of 595 brand new cars — a 5.85 percent drop from the sales in 2007 which totaled 632 units.

Last year’s vehicle sales included 323 sedans, 59 trucks, 45 vans, 162 SUVs and six others.

Microl Corp. topped the 2008 new car sales with 283 units sold, followed by Joeten Motors with 192, and Triple “J”  with 120.

Joeten Motors is the island’s distributor of Nissan, Ford, Honda and Kia.

Microl Corp. sells Toyota and Chevrolet while Triple “J” Motors is the local dealer of Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Suzuki and Mazda.
