Camacho says civilians should not direct traffic

The former police major is now asking the Department of Public Works and the Department of Public Safety to look into what he describes as a blatant violation of law.

“It is a flagrant violation of law to have untrained, uncertified and non-deputized civil servants or contract employees to direct or cause to direct traffic in public primary roadways and secondary thoroughfares,” he said.

In his letter to DPW Secretary Martin Sablan and DPS Commissioner Santiago Tudela, Camacho said the only public officials or employees authorized and certified by law to direct traffic on public highways are police officers.

In an interview, Camacho said he was just “trying to straighten up things to ensure public safety.”

He said he has also asked the Attorney General’s Office to enforce the law.

“I am seeking your utmost cooperation and understanding in immediately ceasing any and all traffic activities conducted by civilian or contract employees now and in the future,” he said in his letter.

Only police officers are allowed to direct traffic in the interest of public safety on CNMI public roadways, he added.
