Camacho to be confirmed

Administration officials, former lawmakers and many members of the community expressed support for Camacho during the public hearing that started at 10:30 a.m.

Sen. Frank Q. Cruz, R-Tinian and  committee chairman, mentioned the government’s dwindling financial resources as the reason for their earlier opposition to Camacho’s nomination, but he also made it “perfectly clear that this committee remains vigilant of any appointment and does not differentiate anybody from anyone.”

As elected officials, he added, they are “commissioned” by the people to do the best for them.

Camacho told the Senate panel that he is honored to be nominated to “such a prestigious and honorable position.”

He then answered several questions from the senators regarding sentencing of criminals, but declined to comment about the case of Rep. Raymond D. Palacios who was arrested last week on “ice” trafficking charges.

Camacho said it is ongoing case and nobody knows yet what will happen to it.

With his experience as a trial attorney, Camacho said he hopes he can bring to the bench fair and impartial justice .

A former police officer, Camacho received his juris doctorate from Gonzaga University School of Law in Washington state, and earned his master’s degree in public administration at Seattle University,

He received his bachelor of arts degree in history from San Jose State University and his associate of arts degree in liberal arts from Northern Marianas College.

Special Assistant to the Administration Esther Fleming, who represented Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, said the administration believes that Camacho deserves to fill the slot in the judiciary vacated by Ramona V. Manglona, who is now a federal judge.

Former Attorney General Matthew Gregory, who has known Camacho since 2004, described the former lawmaker as an experienced lawyer who enjoys his job.

The “incredibly important thing” that he sees in Camacho is “his humility.”

Camacho, moreover, is a positive person, the former AG said.

“He’s not cynical or negative,” he added.
