Child tax delay not NMI’s fault, says Demapan

Just because child tax rebates were previously released prior to the school opening does not mean there’s a deadline, he told Variety yesterday.

Starting with the filing of U.S. taxes, the process in issuing child tax checks, is nationwide, he added. After all the states and territories file taxes, the child tax credit is processed.

Those who are eligible, he said, submit their tax documents that go to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service for certification, then, to the U.S. Treasury Department.

Demapan said it is only when the documents and funds are transferred to the CNMI Treasury that the child tax  credit can be processed here.

So the release checks depends on the completion of the entire process and is not determined by a deadline.

Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos, in a separate interview, said 3,500 recipients will get a total of $4.6 million in child tax credit.

Yesterday, he said was the last day of the local verification process through which the CNMI government checked the accounts.
