In the March 16, 2009 issue of Forbes Magazine, Hotung, a multimillionaire, was listed as a “Hero of Philanthropy.”
He sold one of his homes for $100.5 million in May of 1997 making it the most expensive home in the world at that time.
The article on Hotung is an excellent reading on a long life journey of a man who had survived a war, built a fortune, and has ever since been spreading his wealth for good causes.
Hotung is well known for his philanthropic efforts in China, East Timor, Sri Lanka, and Washington, D.C.
From devising a low cost housing plan for the disadvantaged in Hong Kong, Hotung’s philanthropic efforts also include, to name a few, the construction of hospitals and schools and providing relief efforts to refugee and disaster stricken countries.
With today’s global financial crisis, it is reported by Forbes magazine that Hotung has kept up with all of his charity commitments while being prudent with new donation requests.
The FSM Embassy in Beijing was honored by the special visit of Hotung.
Chargé d’Affaires Carl D. Apis received and welcomed Hotung and they exchanged many pleasant historical stories about Micronesia.
Hotung is no stranger to Micronesia and spoke fondly of earlier visits to different Micronesian islands.
During the meeting, Hotung said he will be traveling soon to Micronesia.
