Christmas tree decoration top winner to get $5,000

Paseo de Marianas Promoters Inc. hosts the annual project which is now in its fourth year.

Sonia Siwa of PDM Promoters said installing Christmas decoration and greetings along the streets and at the Paseo de Marianas will add cheer to the place and help it become an attraction for residents and tourists.

Fifteen public and private schools will be vying for the prizes, Siwa said.

Second prize winner will receive $3,000 while the third prize winner will get $2,000.

Five schools will be awarded the fourth prize of $1,000 each, while seven schools will receive $500 each as fifth prize.

This means all the participating schools will receive prizes, Siwa said.

Decorations must come from recycled materials and participating schools must be  qualified educational institutions required to submit education tax credit receipts on or before Dec. 3, 2009.

Criteria for the prize program awards include use of old or use materials, relevance to the Christmas/holiday theme, attractiveness, creativity and design and durability for outdoor display.

Siwa said the winners will be announced on Dec. 17 during the street market performances in Garapan.

PDM will light up a 30-foot  Christmas tree on Dec. 3 and it will be display until Jan. 7, 2010.

Siwa said resident visitors are invited to make a wish and tie ribbons to the Christmas tree: pink for breast cancer awareness, blue for autism awareness, yellow for showing support to the troops, green for beautifying CNMI, and red for general purposes and other wishes.
