CNMI Broadband Policy & Development Office’s Digital Equity Five-Year Plan receives NTIA approval

(BPD) — The CNMI Broadband Policy & Development Office, established under the CNMI Office of the Governor, is pleased to announce that its Digital Equity Five-Year Plan has officially been approved by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. This approval, finalized on June 21, 2024, comes after a thorough and comprehensive review process following the office’s final submission on May 31, 2024.

The NTIA’s approval highlights the CNMI BPD Office’s commitment to addressing digital disparities and fostering a more digitally inclusive environment within the CNMI. The approval also aligns the CNMI with several other states and territories working towards digital equity for all their residents. This approval will be pivotal in implementing the strategies outlined in the Digital Equity Five-Year Plan, which aims to tackle various challenges faced by multiple groups within the CNMI, including but not limited to low-income households, aging populations, individuals with disabilities, and incarcerated individuals.

The Digital Equity Five-Year Plan includes a wide range of initiatives designed to improve digital access, literacy, and opportunity for all CNMI residents. Key components of the plan include digital literacy workshops, telehealth services, accessible internet at key locations within the community, and more. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios commented on the importance of this achievement, stating, “I am incredibly proud to announce that the NTIA has accepted the CNMI’s Digital Equity Action Plan. This achievement underscores our dedication to closing the digital divide and ensuring all residents have access to the tools and skills necessary to thrive in the digital age. I commend the CNMI Broadband Policy and Development Office who crafted a plan that will enhance the foundation necessary for a vibrant digital economy. This plan promises to drive growth, foster innovation, and improve the quality of life for everyone in our community. Thank you to the NTIA for their guidance and support and our local stakeholders for helping us take this crucial step towards a more connected and prosperous future.”

The Digital Equity Five Year Plan’s approval is a direct result of the CNMI’s commitment to digital equity and economic development. The administration’s proactive approach and dedication to securing funding and fostering partnerships have played a crucial role in achieving this success, ensuring that our community benefits from enhanced digital resources and opportunities.

With this achievement, the CNMI BPD Office is now set to apply for NTIA’s State Digital Equity Capacity Grant, which has allocated the CNMI up to $2.1 million in funding to provide additional resources for digital equity programs and initiatives for the next five years.
