THE CNMI Republican Party under the leadership of its president, former CNMI Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente, has announced its strong support for several initiatives aimed at revitalizing the islands’ tourism industry and economic growth.
Benavente asks, “How many more hotels have to close in the CNMI? How many more individuals will lose their jobs? And how many more public services and programs will have to be reduced before our elected leaders realize that something has to be done today, immediately.”
Benavente added, “Over the many years, the CNMI has had other industries that supported our economy, such as the garment and the gaming industries. We have always returned to the main industry that has survived throughout the numerous natural disasters, world conflicts, and global health challenges. The tourism industry is the only industry that has proven to be beneficial for our people, the environment, and is able to withstand the many obstacles thrown our way.”
“Today, we do not have the luxury of selecting other markets for travelers to the CNMI, and it’s certainly not because we haven’t tried. The CNMI needs tourists from China, and as a resort destination, we have to be competitive and attract these tourists to our islands. Competing with other destinations, such as Guam and Hawaii, requires adequate funding for the Marianas Visitors Authority to promote and pursue travelers from key source markets, including China,” he said.
The CNMI GOP fully endorses the Commonwealth Ports Authority’s application to the Department of Transportation for an exemption from Part 213 Order 2023-8-10 and the implementation of the CNMI EVS-TAP program. This program would allow pre-screened travelers from China to visit the CNMI without a visa under certain conditions, further facilitating the return of Chinese tourists. Benavente said, “We believe that by supporting these initiatives, we can ensure opportunities for jobs and a stable economy.”
To better inform CNMI residents of the GOP’s plans to improve the ailing CNMI economy, the CNMI GOP will be sending out its platform. This document will outline the party’s comprehensive strategies and policies aimed at economic recovery and growth.
