Cockfighting aficionados in Saipan plan to organize for common goal

“We want to organize a group that would uphold the sportsmanship and camaraderie among cockers and breeders here,” Jimmy Blancia, one of the group’s coordinators, said yesterday.

Blancia said cockfight enthusiasts have many plans, not only for the group, but for the community, and to develop cockfighting sports and breeding endeavors among different ethnic groups.

On Sunday, more than 50 cockfight aficionados, including referee, knifeman, cockers and breeders, met at the Kilili Pavilion to forge understanding among them in improving their skills.

Jun Miday, another coordinator, said they wanted to unite the Filipino Sabungeros Community in Saipan to reach a common goal and programs that would benefit not only the cockers and breeders, but the community in general.

If organized, Miday said, the group would venture to community service and fund raising activities to help the less fortunate and needy in the community.

He said they can even help those interested in breeding fighting cock because “we want to teach them about the best way of breeding fighting cock.”

“We can help how to make livelihood in attending high-breed cock,” Miday added.

On July 25, Miday said, the group will meet again to finalize plan to organize the cockfight enthusiasts in Saipan.

The group is inviting all interested individual to attend the meeting at Kilili Pavilion at 6 p.m. to share their comments, insights and views, he said, adding the inputs in the meeting is geared toward the creation of a non-profit organization.

For those interested to join the group they can call Jimmy Blancia at 285-9173 or to Jun Miday at 287-6975.
