Administrative staff member Pat Falig told the Variety yesterday that the Walk Against Violence on Wednesday is part of the activities slated as the CNMI observes October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The Walk Against Violence is also sponsored by the Family Violence Task Force, Ayuda Network Inc. and other community partners.
Falig said this year’s theme is “Striving for a Safer Community.”
“We invite everybody to join us in our effort to curb violence and promote positive change,” she said.
The Domestic Violence Awareness Month committee said “fighting for safety means ensuring that services for victims of domestic violence does not only exist but are comprehensive and culturally relevant.”
The Family Violence Task Force, for its part, said fighting for safety means holding offenders accountable by issuing swift and appropriate punishment and offering treatment programs, and honoring and recognizing those who dedicate their lives to serving survivors including law enforcement, social workers, medical personnel, prosecution, advocates and many others.
Falig said for the remaining Thursdays of this month, they will be distributing flyers and other information leaflets to the community at the street market in Garapan.
“Just look for our booth at the street market and we will give out flyers about domestic violence, teen dating and other helpful materials,” she said.
A motorcade and candle lighting vigil will start at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 on Rota. A Health Walk is scheduled every Saturday from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. on Tinian.
