Concert helps raise funds for NMI ballet

Ana Glushko of  Glushko’s Academy said their concert  aimed to raise funds for their December concert.

Glushko, who created, directed and choreographed the dance numbers and mixed the music, said she was proud of her students.

“The children performed well, and I am so happy. It takes months to learn ballet, and there is little time left before the big event in December,” she said.

The fundraising concert also doubled as a preparatory exposure for Saipan’s ballet dancers for the December concert.

“Not everybody has the opportunity to dance ballet with professional performing stars and this is a wonderful chance for the students,” Glushko said.

In other countries, ballet dancers have to spend money to dance with professional performers, she added.

Glushko said all proceeds from Sunday’s concert and their future fundraising activities will pay for the royalties, tickets, food and lodging of professional  ballet performers who will star in the show set for Dec. 3, 4 and 5.

This ballet performance of “Sleeping Beauty” will showcase ballet stars from Russia, Japan and Korea, Glushko said.

Last Sunday, the 50 young dancers, were divided into four groups and performed scenes from “Swan Lake” and “Sleeping Beauty.”

Glushko is urging members of the community to continue supporting the island’s young ballerinas.

“Help them and us keep classical ballet on this island,” she said.
