Convicted Fiji Navy chief returns to work after jail

Kean was convicted of manslaughter last year, but has been reinstated by Fiji’s military commander  Frank Bainimarama.

Military and government spokesman Maj. Neumi Leweni confirmed that Kean began work on Monday.

“Yes he has started work,” Leweni told the Fiji Times

Interim Defense Minister Ratu Epeli Ganilau said he could not comment because he was not the authority to decide who worked and who didn’t.

“I have no overall command or authority on who is to work and who doesn’t,” he said. “In this case it would be for the military commander to speak.”

According to the 1997 Constitution, the commander of the military is responsible for making appointments of members of the institution.

Bainimarama takes disciplinary action against members of the forces, including removing them.
