Copper wire thief gets 4-month jail term

Alfred Obak appeared for a change of plea hearing on Friday before Associate Judge David A. Wiseman.

Obak pleaded guilty to the lesser included offenses of criminal trespass, misdemeanor theft and misdemeanor criminal mischief for theft and criminal mischief.

Wiseman accepted his plea and sentenced Obak to one year of imprisonment for  criminal trespass, six months for misdemeanor theft, and six months for misdemeanor criminal mischief.

The sentences  will be served consecutively but were all suspended except for four months with credit for time served.

Obak was ordered to pay a $500 fine, a $25 court assessment fee and restitution fee whose amount will be determined by the court in the restitution hearing set for Aug. 16 at 9 a.m.

Obak will perform 140 hours of community work service.

He was placed on supervised probation for 24 months and will undergo counseling and anger management treatment at the Community Guidance Center.

Obak was ordered to stay away from Little Angels Day Care and from his co-defendants Simon Sebuu, Weider Debengek and the juvenile.

Sebuu was acquitted of the burglary charge during a jury trial in November last year but was convicted of two misdemeanors charges — theft and criminal mischief.

The charge of receiving stolen property filed against Debengek was dismissed by the court.

Obak, Sebuu and the juvenile all charged for burglarizing Little Angels Day Care on April 25, 2007 and for stealing its copper wires.
