According to Governor Edwin Chiokai, personnel of the Division of the Environmental Health (DEH) of the Palau Ministry of Health were Kayangel last week to inspect the sites for the construction of the compost toilets.According to DEH, the compost toilets will be funded by grants from Ausaid and US Center for Disease Control (CDC). The Ausaid grant was received through diligent group efforts of the citizens of Kayangel State, the state’s government, and DEH.The CDC grant was accorded the state as a result of the efforts of DEH, Kayangel Peace Corp volunteer to look for alternative means of keeping the state clean.According to Chiokai, DEH has made every effort to support his state clean; and DEH has provided for the necessary expertise the grants are received utilized, and monitored properly.Chiokai had indicated that construction of the compost toilets will commence as soon as everything is finalized and all necessary requirements are met.Chiokai said “this is only the beginning; and as soon as the people learn all the potential of the compost toilets and their benefits to the environment of the states, more toilets would be built.“In the meantime, only two compost toilets will be constructed – one in the youth center and the other at the school grounds,” Chiokai said.
