Court imposes $6K bail on man charged with punching girlfriend

Associate Judge Perry B. Inos ordered 36-year-old Cleofin N. Masao, a resident of Dandan, to post $600 of the total bail in cash and the remaining $5,400 in unsecured bond for his temporary liberty.

The defendant, who is facing charges for one count of assault and battery and one count for assault with a dangerous weapon, appeared in court for a bail hearing on Friday.

He failed to post bail and was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections.

Inos set the preliminary hearing for Jan 16 and the arraignment for Jan. 26. He appointed Chief Public Defender Adam Hardwicke to represent the defendant.

The charges against Masao stemmed from the complaint filed by Detective Andrea C. Ozawa of the Department of Public Safety’s Criminal Investigation Division.

The complaint stated that DPS received a report about a domestic violence incident behind Lucky De Store in San Vicente.

Police officers who responded to the scene stated they were flagged down by neighbors of the victim and were told that the suspect fled with a child on a red sedan. The suspect was drunk, police learned.

Police said the victim told them her boyfriend beat her up. She said the defendant left the house at about 1 p.m. on Jan.7 and returned at about 9 p.m. intoxicated.

She said the defendant punched and slapped her, and hit her with a bench. She sustained injuries and was brought to the battered women’s shelter for her safety.
