CUC confirms recent oil spill in Lower Base

The incident occurred at the Power Plant 1 building, CUC Deputy Executive Director Alan W. Fletcher said.

“About 50 gallons of oily water were released as a small (1.5-inch) corroded pipeline failed just outside the building,” he told Variety in an email.

He said CUC crews stopped their pumping operation on the pipeline while mechanics performed temporary repairs to prevent further dripping.

He said they notified the Environmental Protection Agency, the Division of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Fletcher said  GRESCO, an EPA-approved oil recovery contractor, was called to assist in the cleanup and removal of contaminated soil.

“A total of 22 drums of materials were recovered including absorbent pads, gravel and sand,” he added.

CUC crews are replacing the corroded section of the pipe and will assess and replace similar worn piping to prevent further incidents, he said.
