CUC gets $250K payment from public schools

CUC earlier threatened to cut the power services to public schools if they would not pay their utility bills.

Prior to the partial payment, PSS owed CUC $1.5 million.

CUC said it is banking on its collectibles from the central government, PSS, and other companies to pay for the Aggreko generators it is renting for over $500,000 a month.

In an interview, PSS acting finance director Lori Grizzard yesterday said that no disconnection notices were received to date by PSS, perhaps as a result of the initial payment made to CUC.

She said of the $1.5 million PSS owes CUC, “we are contesting and disputing about $200,000 in water billings.”

CUC, she added, billed PSS for water services in FY 2006 when the central government was still paying for the schools’ utilities.

It was only in FY 2007 when schools were asked to pay their CUC bills.

Grizzard said CUC and PSS will try to “reconcile” the figures.

The $250,000 payment made to CUC came from the balance of the  FY 2008 budget for schools, she added.

According to PSS, it is still waiting for the $3 million  from the finance department since the last fiscal year ended in September.

The amount is part of the school system’s fourth quarter allotment, Grizzard said.

Of the $3 million, about $1.2 million is for the salaries of PSS employees; $250,000 for utilities; and $455,000 is for vendors.

Last November, PSS incurred $381,000 in CUC bills.
