Last December, he visited Saipan with the other candidate for the position for a familiarization tour.
CUC Executive Director Abe Utu Malae has held the post in acting capacity after Bruce Megarr’s contract was not renewed by then-Executive Director Tony Muna.
In an email, Fletcher told Variety: “As you can imagine, I am very busy getting to know everyone and up-to-speed on issues.”
Since Tuesday, he has been in meetings with water and wastewater division management.
Malae said hiring Fletcher will allow CUC to “manage water and wastewater on a more businesslike basis.”
He said they can speed up the goal of 24/7 water service to all customers on Saipan.
They can also effectively follow up on customer complaints and reduce the number of complaints by providing better service, Malae added.
Based on the job vacancy announcement, the deputy executive director will get a salary of $100,000 to $120,000.
The deputy executive director for drinking water is among the eight positions required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. All have been filled by CUC.
