CUC: Island experienced major outage

The power went off beginning at 2:30 a.m., he said.

At Power Plant 1, he said Engine 7 tripped due to high water temperature.

“The reason for the high temperature was that the motor powering the 100-kw secondary water pump burnt out,” he said.

CUC is now investigating it and checking all other water pump motors, he said.

He said that only 5 megawatts of spinning reserve were available at the time.

Engine 5 tripped due to “over excitation” caused by a reactive power overload, he added.

Malae said all six units at Power Plant 4 also automatically tripped due to the resulting overload.

At Kiya Substation, all three feeders — K1, K2 and K4 — automatically tripped due to under-voltage load shedding,

he added.

From 2:40 to 2:43 a.m. Feeder 7, Feeder 4 and Feeder 2 were energized, Malae said.

Engines 1 and 5 were on line by 3:07 a.m., he added.

By 3:35 a.m. he said Feeders Kiya 1, 4 and 2 were energized.

“We are reviewing the proximate and primary causes of the disruption in the hopes of preventing such an event from occurring in the future,” he said.
