CUC: Leaking toilets can waste thousands of gallons of water

About 95 percent of the complaints from residents are traced to  a leaky toilet, he said.

“You have no idea how a tiny overflow could waste 30,000 gallons a month.”

Megarr said CUC conducted a water audit at one of the hotels in Chalan Kanoa and was able to determine the cause of excessive water use involving over million of gallons every month.

CUC is willing to assist households to minimize the loss of, and conserve, water supply, he said.

The average household water usage should be only 145 to 245 gallons a day.

If the water usage exceeds the average, Megarr said water customers should immediately check all their water line connections.

“We look forward working with them and assisting them in assessing their water usage,” he added.

While CUC has no sufficient manpower to check all households, residents can always detect if their usage is excessively high by comparing their monthly water usage, he said.

“They can always report it to us.”

In most cases, he said, water leaks can be found in the  toilet, broken pipes and water storage.

Megarr said the demise of the garment industry on Saipan has reduced the water demand.

However, he added, CUC has no way of determining the water volume during the height of the garment factories’ operation because majority of them were not metered.
