“This month, we’ll probably get a reduction [in power prices] because the fuel price has decreased,” Muna told Variety and noted that the adjustments will be carried to the September billing cycle as this month’s electric rates have been set already.
This month, CUC is charging residential customers 42.9 cents per kilowatt hour for the first 500 kwh only. Those who will consume up to 2,000 kwh will buy electricity at 49.9 cents per kwh. Consumption in excess of 2,000 kwh will be charged 54 cents per kwh.
Commercial establishments pay 49.9 cents per kwh.
Muna did not say how much CUC will drop its power rates for September but assured that it will be adjusted to reflect the actual decrease in prices of fuel that they import from Singapore.
CUC used to buy diesel fuel from Mobil at $4.31 a gallon.
Now, CUC is paying $3.80 a gallon.
The agency consumes more than 2 million gallons of fuel every month to run its power plants on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
This fiscal year 2008, CUC projects its production fuel expenses to reach close to $72 million, excluding other oil and lube used by its power plants.
