DARE program gets $1,000 from PDI

PDI group package supervisor presented the check to acting Department of Public Safety Commissioner Ambrose Ogumuro to show their appreciation to the police  and fire divisions for continually supporting and contributing to the success of PDI’s summer kids program for the past five years.

PDI director Gordon Marciano said the summer kids program is designed to educate the tourists and bring them closer to the “CNMI’s finest men and women in blue.”

“We wanted our tourists to know that they should not be afraid to approach a police officer or fireman because they are there to serve the people and provide assistance,” Marciano said.

The fun part about their summer program is the first reaction they get from the tourists when they announce that the next stop will be  DPS.

“The tourists are usually shocked that we are taking them to the police station and the fire station but when we get there, they get excited getting experience to sit in a police car and fire truck and they could not stop taking photos with our officers,” Marciano said.

Tourists are usually thrilled to know they can interact with the police officers here.

“The tourists said that in their country, you can’t just walk up and take photos or talk to a police officer,” he said.

Marciano said the program always adds to the attraction of CNMI as one of the friendliest destinations in the Pacific.
