Demapan to wait for result of casino referendum

Depaman, Covenant-Saipan, told reporters yesterday that the  draft of the commonwealth-wide bill that he was tasked to work on was almost done.

He said it is important that Saipan voters participate in the referendum so the Legislature will know where they stand on the controversial issue.

“It’s always nice to get the sentiment of the people,” said Demapan.

He said the new casino bill he will introduce aims to benefit the entire CNMI,  including the Retirement Fund, the medical referral program and the municipal governments of Rota and Tinian.

He said he is trying  his best to make sure “everything is in the right place.”

Asked if he will still introduce the bill if voters reject it in the referendum, Demapan said it will depend on the voter turnout.

“That is why we have to see the number of those who will participate in the referendum to determine whether it’s enough to represent the majority of the voters,” he said.

This is why he is urging everyone qualified to vote to participate in the Nov. 4 referendum which will be conducted by Northern Marianas College students.
