Demolition of typhoon-damaged NMC buildings almost complete

NMC Interim President Frankie Eliptico said the task is one of the most extensive demolition projects in the CNMI.

The buildings that were demolished included A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, Q, R, and S.

Yutu destroyed 37 of  39 NMC classrooms  when the super typhoon hit Saipan and Tinian in October 2018.

“We are glad that the demolition of the heavily damaged buildings is nearly complete,” Eliptico said. “We’re in the midst of another typhoon season and we want to avoid having another storm hurl debris around campus or cause harm to employees, students, or other structures on campus.”

He said NMC is moving forward with the facilities master plan. “This will establish the framework for the current and future growth and development of capital improvements on campus, including classrooms and other learning spaces, offices, labs, open spaces.”

He added, “We are thankful to the U.S. Department of Education, the governor, the NMC Board of Regents, the guidance of regulatory agencies, and others for their support and help with our recovery activities.”

Eliptico also acknowledged the work of NMC team members. “They have been working diligently to move this project forward despite the challenges of the pandemic.”

The demolition of the buildings is funded by the U.S. Department of Education through an emergency assistance grant.
