Instructor Kimberly Vaillancourt said the camp participants will have to pay $160 each including a $10 insurance fee, and they have to organize fundraisers to come up with the necessary funds.
Vaillancourt said they are still accepting high school students —including incoming freshmen — for the Discovery Camp which will be held on July 5-11 at the Tachogna Beach on Tinian.
The deadline for application is June 30.
“We would like to appeal to generous individuals who would like to help students who are interested to join but cannot afford to pay the fees,” Vaillancourt said.
Next year, they are planning to have students from Rota, extend the camp from one week to one month and eventually bring in other students from the states, she added.
Vaillancourt said raffle tickets are available at $5 each, and the raffle draw will be on July 6. She said ticket holders do not have to be present to win.
Prizes at stake include brunch at the Hyatt Regency Saipan, an overnight stay at Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino, $200 cash, a $100 gift certificate from Salon de Manila, Discover Scuba, Aquasmith, Price Costco water gear, a Bestseller gift certificate and more prizes.
Vaillancourt said Discovery Camp participants will undergo hands-on marine science experience in the water and scuba diving. They will study World War II history, go hiking, rappelling and participate in other interesting activities.
The Discovery Camp is supported by the Division of Environmental Quality, the Mariana Islands Nature Alliance, the Tinian Mayor’s Office, Coastal Resources Management, Northern Marianas College, the fire division and generous individuals.
Raffle tickets are available at the Salon de Manila, outside Price Costco and from students who will participate in the camp.
