DPS issues traffic and opening of public schools advisory

(DPS) — Public schools are set to open on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. The Department of Public Safety will enforce measures to ensure a safe and secure environment for students, teachers, staff, and the community. Increased police presence around schools will be deployed to monitor and manage traffic flow, and enforce speed limits to prevent congestion and accidents. Security checks will also be conducted regularly within schools.

“We ask the community to stay vigilant at school bus stops and motorist are asked to increase caution within pedestrian crosswalks.”

In preparation, DPS has reviewed and updated emergency response plans and protocols, including drills to prepare for potential emergencies. DPS will also monitor social media and other sources for potential threats or safety concerns to our students. The community is encouraged to report suspicious activity. As part of our student safety education, DPS also asks the community and parents to educate our children on safety protocols, including stranger danger, cyberbullying, and social media safety.

As the Beach Road projects nears completion, DPS kindly asks for the public’s patience and understanding. DPS anticipates increased traffic flow, including pedestrians along the roadways.

Motorist are asked to consider using alternate routes to reach their destinations, and anticipate a 20 to 30 minutes delay in travel time.  For residents of Dandan and As Lito, an alternate route is available via As Perdido and Martinez Road.

Significant congestion is expected on the northbound lanes within beach road Susupe to the traffic signal light by Atkins Kroll, throughout the day.

Between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., congestion is anticipated on the southbound lanes of Beach Road San Jose and Beach Road Susupe.

To ensure safety and improve traffic flow, construction zone speed limits will be enforced, and officers will be stationed at major intersections.
