DPS rescues 4 fishermen

DPS said its boating safety personnel rescued boat captain Romero Del Mundo and crew members Apolinario Dela Rosa, Ricar Adubal and Gregorio Din.

DPS said it received a 911 call on Saturday, at about 8:06 p.m., regarding a distressed vessel about one to two miles west of the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

At about 8:56 p.m., boating safety personnel  aboard a rescue vessel responded and arrived along side the distressed boat.

DPS boating safety towed the vessel back to Smiling Cove Marina.

The boat captain told DPS that their departed  the marina at about 5 p.m., Saturday.

The boat traveled north toward the main channel at the first green buoy just north of Smiling Cove, where they anchored in the lagoon and started rod fishing, police said.

As darkness fell, they noticed that their vessel was drifting in a southwesterly direction, according to DPS spokesman PO2 Eric David.

Police said the victims checked their anchor but it broke off. They tried to start the boat engine, but to no avail. They then called 911 for assistance.

When inspected, the vessel was found compliant with local boating safety laws, David said.
