He told DPS Commissioner Clyde Norita that power outages will continue on Saipan, thus, contingency plan on roads must be implemented to ensure public safety.
“An integral part of dealing with the outages is to provide safety to our drivers and their passengers. It is imperative that the Department of Public Safety plan for these outages and provide traffic officers at major intersections to assist drivers by directing traffic,” the acting governor told Norita in a memo.
“The Department of Public Safety should not wait for an accident to occur before it consistently provides traffic assistance during power outages. Pursuant to this directive, DPS is hereby directed to monitor and direct traffic at all major intersections during power outages,” he added.
This month, CUC has again scheduled a two-hour rotating blackouts in Saipan’s villages.
Power plant 1, the main source of electricity on Saipan and the two other secondary power plants on island, are able to collectively produce only 31.5 megawatts of energy.
The island needs at least 41 megawatts, thus, CUC has to ration power supply.
