‘Dramatic’ actions vs garment trust fund mulled

In December, they asked for help from trust fund chairman Timothy H. Bellas.

“Please include us in your list of recipients whom you granted a check of $350 each on Dec. 14,” stated a letter signed by some 50 garment workers.

Carlito J. Marquez, who has been helping these workers, said the trust fund should consider their request for humanitarian reasons.

On Friday, the federal court granted Bellas’ motion for the disbursement of some of the funds to 14 community organizations and schools.

The trustees, Marquez said, should consider “first and foremost” the supposed direct beneficiaries of the fund — the former garment workers.

United Workers Movement president Rabby Syed agrees.

He said the trustees should accommodate all former garment workers before extending any assistance to  charitable institutions or schools.
