Earth Hour on March 27

The Division of Environmental Quality encourages everyone to stand together with communities worldwide to show that CNMI wants action on climate change.

A a group of islands, the CNMI “stands to be greatly affected by rising sea levels, increased drought, ocean acidification (which can harm our coral reefs), and other aspects of a warmer Earth,” the DEQ stated in its Web site (http://earth-hour-northern-mariana-islands.blogspot.com).

DEQ stated that last year, more than 4,100 cities, towns, and municipalities from 88 countries participated in the Earth Hour.

This year will be the first time for CNMI to be added to the list.

You can also visit the Web site and add your name to the growing number of participants.

“Help us by spreading the word through your social and business networks. Tell your family, friends, and others to visit the Web site and pledge their own participation for March 27,” DEQ urges.

If you own a business or work in an office, you can help in the campaign for support by sending out memos encouraging other employees to participate in Earth Hour.

You can also ask owners and managers to participate by turning off non-essential lighting during Earth Hour, or talk to other business partners about their participation.

If you would like to volunteer to help with Earth Hour events, would like to become a sponsor, or have recommendations,  e-mail Aric Bickel at [email protected].

You can also visit the main Earth Hour Web site at www.earthhour.org for more information and to keep up with what other countries are doing.
