Electrical fault causes power outage

Gary P. Camacho, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s power division manager, said they were able to initiate power restoration in less than 30 minutes in some feeders of the island.

The power outage started at 11:30 in Kagman 3 while the restoration process  took place from 12:08 noon to 1:34 p.m. Power was completely restored at 3 p.m.

Camacho said a primary high voltage line burned due to a pole top pin which severed the primary line and affected the secondary line.

The power supply was cut off, he said, because the protective device that was supposed to isolate the fault failed to open.

This simultaneously turned off the power plant engines and the Kiya substation, resulting in an islandwide power outage.

Camacho said CUC is now in the process of acquiring all necessary materials for the maintenance of its power generators.

He said CUC apologizes anew for any inconvenience the unscheduled power interruption imposed on the community.
