Farmers group drafts strategic plan

The strategic plan was based on the discussions on issues related to enhancing agriculture in the CNMI.

The group is composed of Saipan Municipal Council vice chairman Ray Blas Camacho, Department of Lands and Natural Resources Secretary Ignacio Dela Cruz and Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service Director Ross Manglona.

During the plenary and breakaway discussions on Wednesday, the farmers,  business groups, concerned government agencies and members of the community came up with plans of action that will develop local agriculture.

The five-year strategic plan will focus on the needs of local farmers and ranchers.

Camacho said the core group will have another meeting to pick three pressing goals they can implement in the first year of the plan.

Among the issues discussed during the summit were the marketing and distribution channels of locally grown farm products, human resources, government regulations and infrastructure.

All the participants agreed to hold second summit that will focus on creating a union of farmers, ranchers, businesses and government representatives.
