Farmers, ranchers support slaughterhouse project

Deleon Guerrero, who has been in the piggery business for over 25 years, is hoping the government will also support the project which was  initiated by local businessmen, ranchers and farmers.

“I hope the man up there will support us so he can help small local businesses,” he said, referring to Gov. Benigno R. Fitial.

“With a slaughterhouse, we can market our pigs, recover our costs and hire people,” he told Variety.

Isidoro Cabrera, a farmer and Saipan Sabalu Farmers Market president, said he received positive feedback from farmers and ranchers regarding the proposed slaughterhouse.

The project, he said, is long overdue and should be supported by the government.

“This is one way to improve our economy. This is something we should continue — not only a slaughterhouse but other agriculture programs as well,” he added.

Cabrera said there is also a need to produce local animal feed which will reduce the cost of raising pigs and chickens.

Even without the military buildup on Guam, he believes there is a great demand for local meat products as long as they are fresh.
