Interim Defense Minister Ratu Epeli Ganilau confirmed this.
Ratu Epeli said military personnel from Fiji used to go to a hospital in New Zealand for treatment.
He said ever since the military takeover in 2006, the New Zealand government had placed travel restrictions on those involved in the interim government.
“So it would be sensible to shift away from a place where we are not wanted and go to a more accommodating place,” Ratu Epeli said.
He said Fiji military’s $500,000 medical contract has been shifted from Wakefield Hospital in New Zealand to Batra Hospital in India.
Ratu Epeli said the hospitals in India would provide better medical care for military personnel.
Fiji’s interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama was on a visit to Batra Hospital in India to follow up with his earlier visit to inspect facilities at the Batra Hospital in New Delhi for overseas medical treatment of Fijij military personnel.
