Since 2003, he said the faculty assembly has been pushing to have all contract renewals based on an objective evaluation.
This was also the position of former NMC Regent Agnes M. McPhetres, Sobolewski said.
From the point of view of faculty, NMC’s contract system has resulted in poor morale.
He said employee contracts are being terminated for no reason at all.
The board of regents, he added, should agree to the faculty assembly’s recommendation that a contract should be indefinite or not subject to automatic renewal or non-renewal every two years.
The NMC president will still have the full authority to terminate anybody, but for a cause, he said.
Sobolewski admitted that NMC is now divided between those who support President Carmen Fernandez and those who side with McPhetres, who has been critical of Fernandez.
The NMC board, he added, is also divided.
One of the regents tried to put the resignation of McPhetres to a vote, but no one seconded the motion, Sobolewski said.
