FSM Dean Professor Robert Moulds said they had evidence that there was a leak of a proposed examination paper which was recognized before the examination was scheduled.
He said another paper was set for the students to sit. “To the best of our knowledge, there has not been a leakage of an examination paper which has actually been used,” he said.
Moulds said a staff member has been suspended with the case being referred to police for investigation. This is the second time such an incident at the school has been referred to police.
Last year, the pharmacology paper from the School of Dentistry was leaked to students and an investigation was ordered by the then dean, Professor David Brewster.
“There was a leaked paper in 2007 which resulted in an academic staff member being prosecuted. The present case is in a different department of FSM and as far as we know is unrelated to the case last year,” said Moulds.
He said they were deeply concerned and very disappointed that the measures they put in place after the leak last year did not prevent another leak this year.
He said further measures would be put in place to ensure that exam papers are not leaked in future.
“There are a minimum number of people who must be involved in setting exam papers, the lecturer who gives the course, an outside moderator who must determine that the examination is set at the right standard, and the staff involved with the printing of the papers. We will continue to try to make this process as leak-proof as possible,” said Moulds.
He said the exam paper leak did not affect the exam.
