Fiji’s auditor general resigns

But Auditor General Eroni Vatuloka won’t leave until his completes his last assignment — his investigation into Fiji’s military commander and interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama’s F$184,740 ($102,633) payout for leave accumulated from 1978.

Vatuloka, who handed in his resignation last week, joins the Asian Development Bank as program coordinator for the Pacific regional audit initiative from next month.

He held the position for nine years. Prior to that he held the post of deputy auditor general for three years.

Deputy Auditor General Tevita Bolanavanua, the acting auditor general, said Vatuloka gave a three-month resignation notice and immediately took leave owed to him.

“He provided a three-month notice and he could have worked until June but he had a lot of leave due to him,” he said. “He has gone totally out of the system.”

Bolanavanua said Vatuloka was responsible for the investigation into the military commander’s pay and would see it through before moving on. A copy of the investigation has been sent to the military for a comment.

“A copy of the report was sent to the military commander and there are people in the military who will comment on it,” he said.

“After that, a copy will be sent to the interim finance minister and the original will go to the office of the speaker of the House of Representatives. He will be coming to the office to clear the report and some others before he leaves,” Bolanavanua said.
