Fiji’s ousted PM to tender resignation

The Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua Party has decided that they allow the president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, the long weekend public holiday to rest before they approach him on Tuesday

A high court in Fiji has ruled unlawful the termination of Qarase and the dissolution of the island’s parliament.

SDL Party Director Peceli Kinivuwai said Qarase would definitely not be coming back under the current circumstances.

It is also understood he may be forwarding a name to the president to take the nation forward as a caretaker prime minister to take the nation to elections in line with the court decision.

A stay appeal to defer the process for Supreme Court hearing was also denied leaving the interim government very little option at the moment.

Interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum has also been asked whether abrogating the constitution was a option. But no response has been forthcoming from him.

“The ball is now in the interim government’s court,” Kinivuwai said

Former Fiji Law Society president Graham Leung  described the outcome of the Qarase court case as principled, and a victory for constitutionalism and the rule of law.
