Filipino community to hold flag raising for Independence Day

Philippine Consul General Wilfredo DL. Maximo in a telephone interview said that the flag raising ceremony will be at 7 a.m.

“We are inviting the community to join us on Sunday and be a part of our activities for the celebration of the 110th Philippine Independence Day,” Maximo said.

During the brief ceremony, Maximo said there will be a reading of messages from the Office of the President, the secretary of Labor and Employment, the Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

He added that the author of the winning essay “Ties that Bind: Exploring the Historic Connections of the United States, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Republic of the Philippines” will also be reading his or her piece during the event.

Maximo said the contest was open to all high school students aimed to pique their interest to learn more and write in their own words the relevance of the historical ties among between the Northern Marianas, the Philippines and the United States.

He added that a Filipino community breakfast will follow the flag raising ceremony. Maximo added that on June 15, the United Filipino Organization is organizing the “Fiestang Pinoy,” a day of fun and games which will be held at the Garapan Central Park.

“The Fiestang Pinoy is one day where kababayans in the community can enjoy food, fun, games, dancing and music. This is one event the community should not miss,” Maximo said.
