The health seminars, which are free for the public, have been held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the past three Wednesdays. They covered various health topics geared toward providing guidance to members of the community to have a healthy lifestyle.
The health seminars held on July 14, 21, and 28 discussed diabetes, nutrition and exercise.
Joeten-Kiyu library executive director John O. Gonzales said the response of the community has been tremendous.
“We are very glad to have people come to the library, eager to learn things about how to live healthier lives, and we are once again inviting the community to join the final seminar on medication. This can help individuals and families a lot,” Gonzales said.
Made possible through collaboration of PHI Pharmacy, the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, the Commonwealth Diabetes Coalition and the University of Hawaii at Hilo, the free health seminars are part of the activities that aim to draw more people to the library this summer.
Healthy refreshments are served during the seminars.
PHI Pharmacy vice president/owner Bruce A. Cohen told the Variety last week that they are expanding their efforts in serving the community in spreading awareness and helping others live healthier lives.
Gonzales said following the success of the health seminars, they are planning to expand and offer more seminars about various topics that will be helpful to the community.
“We are planning next to tap the Commonwealth Cancer Awareness Coalition but not only that, we are also looking into offering free lectures on other topics such as environment, parenting, stress management, anger management, budgeting and financing and other topics. We want to make these accessible at the library to have more people come in and avail of our services,” Gonzales said.
