No one was hurt among the tenants who are guest workers.
One of them said he safely evacuated his three children after he saw smoke coming from the kitchen of one of the wooden houses at past 1 p.m.
He then called 911 and firefighters soon arrived.
Fire and emergency personnel assisted tenants from adjacent residential houses, commercial buildings, and a daycare school in their evacuation.
Personnel at a nearby telecommunications station were also on standby while Commonwealth Utilities Corp. dispatched its personnel and turned off the power supply in the area.
The incident is still under investigation.
