First Aggreko shipment arrives; firm not exempted from zoning law

Despite the governor’s emergency declaration regarding the island’s power situation, Aggreko will not be exempted from the zoning board requirements, Press Secretary Charles P. Reyes told this reporter.

Consisting of nine 20-foot containers, the shipment will be stored at the Saipan port.

Aggreko will ship three more cargoes to the island before it installs its generators which the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. will rent for a year for $6 million.

The Mell Singapore docked at past 3 p.m. yesterday and the Aggreko cargoes were discharged shortly before 4 p.m.

The cargoes were checked by the company’s representatives and ports authority officials.

“Once all the generators are in, we will bring them all online after six days,” Reyes said.

CUC, he added, will determine the location of the generators that are likely to be installed in Lower Base.

Aggreko has to comply with the zoning requirements, he said, but CUC will assist the company in getting all the necessary permits.
