Fisheries forum for students

The Western Pacific Fisheries Regional Management Council and the Department of Land and Natural Resources, the event’s facilitators, are inviting all high school students to attend the “Marianas Archipelago High School Fisheries Symposium:

Integrating Tradition and Western Science.”

Council coordinator Jack Ogumoro said the participating students will learn about the marine environment, perform hands-on activities and receive prices from the raffle draw.

Representatives from  federal and local environmental agencies as well as marine biologists will make presentation during the symposium.

Ogumoro is also inviting the other members of the community, including fishermen, to attend the public meeting after the symposium.

The meeting will be held from 6  p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Fiesta Resort.

To be discussed are: fishery management measures for the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument, the federal bottomfish fishing permit requirements, community-based management and grant opportunities as well as the Mariana archipelago lunar calendar and fishing almanac.

Copies of the first Marianas Archipelago Lunar Calendar will be given out during the symposium and at the meeting.
