Fishermen thank authorities for Puerto Rico street light

“It’s been three months that we didn’t have a chance to fish for ‘atulai’ in the area,” a local resident said.

He said they couldn’t catch fish in the previous months because there was no light in the area.

The atulai are attracted to  light at night, he added.

At least 35 individuals were once again fishing in the area on Saturday night.

They said “mafuti” and “mahi-mahi” are also abundant in the area.

During the last four months without light, “there was nothing to catch,” said Tristan Villagomez.

“Not all of us have boats to use so we can fish in the deep,” he added.

He said most of them use rod and reel to fish.

According to Villagomez, the Puerto Rico area is the only place where he can catch pounds of fish without leaving the shore.

When asked what he will do to the over five pounds of fish he had caught on Saturday night, he said: “I will sell it and use the money to buy rice.”

The recreational fishermen, for their part, expressed their gratitude to the authorities for turning on the light.

“I missed fishing in this place,” one of them said.
