Fitial nominates former lawmaker as Indigenous Affairs director

Demapan previously worked in the same capacity during the third Teno administration.

As a new political appointee of the Fitial administration, he needs the confirmation of the Senate.

Demapan was told to submit copies of his résumé, financial statement and police clearance to the Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Governmental Investigations.

In 2006, Demapan pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of taking endangered species in connection with an incident in 2004 wherein he and three other men were accused of clearing a land that served as a habitat for the nightingale-reed warblers despite the Division of Fish and Wildlife’s warning about their presence.

He was sentenced to one-year probation.

He served as a House member in the 4th CNMI Legislature. In 2003, he ran for a Precinct 1 House seat but lost.
