Bordallo confirmed that Obama will speak at a public event, but no further details were available as of press time.
Obama will arrive on Guam on March 22.
The president will stay one night and depart on Tuesday as he begins his Asian tour to Indonesia and Australia. The president’s trip to the Asia-Pacific region will be from March 22 to 26.
During a press briefing on the president’s upcoming trip, Ben Rhodes, deputy national security advisor for strategic communications, confirmed that Obama will stay overnight on Guam and that Guam is his first stop on his trip.
“The first stop on the trip for the president is in Guam. We’ll be in Guam Monday, March 22. And that evening, Guam time, the president will be hosting a public event where he’ll be able to speak to both our — the community in Guam and of course some of the military personnel that the United States has in Guam,” said Rhodes.
“Barring some unforeseen complication, we have White House confirmation to the media that President Obama will be stopping on Guam and staying overnight,” Bordallo said.
Although the president will leave behind his healthcare reform initiative in the hands of Congress, the White House announced that for the past few days, Obama has met and talked with many members of Congress about the benefits of passing healthcare reform.
White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said during a media briefing that the Asia Tour “was an extremely important trip for the United States of America for the President to go to Indonesia and Australia.”
