Flores is Saipan’s next mayor; Aldan tops Northern Islands race

In the Northern Islands mayoral race, Republican Tobias D. Aldan defeated Covenant Party’s Ramona T. Rebuenog by  a single vote — 69 to 68.

Flores, a former agriculture director, in an interview yesterday said words were not enough to express his appreciation to the people of Saipan.

Instead of celebrating his victory today, Flores said he will attend the funeral of James Michael Ada and his one-year old-son who died in a car accident on Middle Road last Nov. 1.

The Covenant Party’s Marianne DLG. Tudela finished second with 1,582 votes while former Board of Education Chairman Roman C. Benavente placed third with 1,552.

In fourth place was  the Democratic Party’s Angelo O. Villagomez, who received 1,543 votes.

The rest of the candidates and the votes they got:

Former Corrections Commissioner Lino S. Tenorio 1,487, former Rep. Antonio M. Camacho 566, retired educator Jose DLG. Sanchez 517, former Rep. Candido B. Taman 414 and former Senate President Juan S. Demapan 278.

Flores said he was overwhelmed by the result of the election.

For the nonpartisan Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council race, there were only two candidates: incumbent member Ramon B. Camacho, who received 5,195 votes, and Eric D. Diaz with 5,133.

The council has three seats.
